Women's representation in the media sector in this country is 29%!
No matter how advanced we are in the past, the status quo of gender equality is still controversial. This is especially the case in the media. UNESCO points out that in the field of media throughout the Asia-Pacific region, the representation of women is still significantly lower than that of men.
Speaking at a two-day capacity building workshop for women journalists organized by the UNESCO New Delhi office in association with the Sri Lanka Press Institute on 26-27 February 2020, UNESCO New Delhi Director, Eric Fault said, UNESCO believes that this is a crucial prerequisite for.
Accordingly, we have on two occasions submitted an application to the Government Information Department seeking information regarding the number of journalists registered with the Government Information Department in the year 2020.
Accordingly, persons working in the field of media should have registered with the Government Information Department and obtained at least the following qualifications to obtain the Journalist Identity Card issued by it.
- Must have been working as a journalist on a permanent or contract basis in a recognized media institution for at least 06 months.
- Must have worked for a freelance journalist for at least one consecutive year in a nationally recognized electronic or print media organization.
Accordingly, 3113 identity cards of journalists have been issued by the Government Information Department for the year 2020. Among those registered identity card holders, 904 are women. That size is represented as follows.
- Journalist 835
- Web Journalist 44
- Media Services 25
(This information is related to women journalists registered with the Department of Government Information in 2020. The actual number of employees currently employed may be slightly higher as IDs are not issued to those who work on a training basis.)
However, in comparison to this information, it should be noted that for the year 2020, the representation of women as journalists will be 29.03%.
